Duties The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative office in Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, is seeking to hire a highly qualified Economist, preferably starting October 19, 2026.

The position is offered as a one-year local contractual appointment, with the possibility of renewal for successive terms of up to three years, subject to continued need and satisfactory performance.

Candidates must be nationals or residents of the Republic of Uzbekistan or be able to independently obtain a valid work permit before starting employment with the Fund to be considered. Proof of nationality, residency, and/or work authorization will be required prior to starting employment. The IMF will not sponsor or assist with obtaining work permits.

Job Summary

The Economist supports the Resident Representative and mission team as needed, including through (a) performing analytical work, e.g., undertaking economic analysis, evaluating, monitoring, and assessing economic developments and policies, (b) liaising with the Uzbek authorities, (c) supporting office management activities.
The Economist responds creatively to address new economic issues and contexts; work with other international financial institutions, bilateral and multilateral donors and other stakeholders and develop and maintain databases on aspects of the economy. Economists at this level work independently under the general supervision of the Resident Representative.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under supervision, the selected candidate will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:
• Monitor and analyze macroeconomic developments, including inflation, monetary indicators, developments in the financial and external sectors, fiscal indicators (including revenues, expenditures, public debt, and debt service), and balance of payments developments.
• Provide the country team with accurate and comprehensive data and analysis of monetary, financial, external, and fiscal sector developments and related indicators on a regular basis and upon request, using data from official sources and in close liaison with the Central Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan (CBU) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan (MoEF).
• Contribute to policy formulation and the preparation of country team documents, including briefing notes, staff reports, and Selected Issues Papers, based on robust surveillance and analysis.
• Support functional and area department mission teams, as well as the IMF's Caucasus, Central Asia, and Mongolia Regional Capacity Development Center, in the design and implementation of the technical assistance agenda, including mission preparation, discussions with counterparts, reporting, and follow-up activities in relevant areas.
• Develop and maintain effective working relations with the authorities, primarily the CBU and MoEF.
• Collaborate and coordinate with development partners on issues related to the IMF's mandate.
• Conduct research and prepare a variety of analytical outputs.
• Actively seek new sources of economic data to identify emerging economic trends and other relevant developments in the country.
*Note: The list of duties is illustrative of regular and recurring functions; however, the Economist is expected to perform other duties as required and assists in the smooth functioning of the office.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently and contribute to strengthening the IMF's relationship with the authorities and other stakeholders in Uzbekistan. The candidate should be able to work effectively under pressure, including outside normal office hours when required, in a multicultural environment, and demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Professional requirements MA in macroeconomics, financial economics, or relevant fields, e.g., international economics, monetary economics, public finance, econometrics, labor economics, political economy, or international trade and finance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Five or more years of relevant work experience (e.g., econometrics, statistics, finance) or equivalent experience—for example, familiarity with the operations of the CBU and/or MoEF, or equivalent experience.

Strong macro expertise, analytical and quantitative skills, and interest in policy-related research. Strong understanding of Uzbekistan's economy.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to effectively work in multi-sectoral and multi-cultural teams, as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiative.

Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with private and public sector stakeholders.
Proficiency in software applications is required, e.g., Excel, Power Point, and econometrics packages, together with a knowledge of statistical and econometrics techniques and macroeconomic relationships.

Publication of research papers in academic journals would be considered a significant advantage.
