The Central Asian Countries (CACs) of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are signatories to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought (UNCCD). Land degradation in Central Asian Countries has major socio-economic impacts on the national economies, as well as on the livelihoods of rural communities. In response to these challenges, the CACs together with a group of development cooperation partners established an umbrella program titled Central Asian Countries Initiative for Land Management (CACILM).
The overall goal and objectives of CACILM are the restoration, maintenance, and enhancement of the productive functions of land leading to the improved economic and social well-being of those who depend on these resources while preserving the environmental functions of these lands in the spirit of UNCCD. CACILM has two major sets of activities: (i) implementation of the national programming frameworks (NPFs) for sustainable land management (SLM) in each CAC; and (ii) multicountry activities to support the implementation of the work program under the CACILM Multicountry Partnership Framework (CMPF) and to build capacity in sustainable land management.
Multicountry Capacity Building (MCB) Project is one of four CACILM multi-country projects. MCB Project is being implemented by UNDP, GTZ, and the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD (GM); GEF is one of project funders. The project is aimed at elimination of SLM-related system level capacity gaps in Central Asia. |
