UNDP has been involved in the water sector in Uzbekistan for more than 10 years and it has built trust and credibility as a partner of choice in development assistance in reforming the water sector in Uzbekistan. UNDP pioneered assistance to the Government in applying principles of integrated water resources management planning at the basin level, namely the Zarafshan river basin. At the national level, UNDP has facilitated and provided technical assistance in drafting country's first modern Water Code - once approved it will be a major paradigm shift in how water is managed in Uzbekistan.
EU launched a new Programme on "Sustainable Management of Water Resources in rural areas in Uzbekistan", and within this programme, UNDP will be responsible for implementation of the Component 2 on "Technical Capacity Building" while GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) will be responsible for implementation of Component 1 on "National Policy Framework for Water Governance and Integrated Water Resources Management".
Within Component 2 of the Programme, activities will address capacity building needs of entities in charge of training provision at levels of river basin organizations, irrigation systems, water user associations and farmers. Along with enhancing capacities of national entities in charge of training in the water sector, the capacity building component will develop a unified capacity building programme for water management organizations and professionals thereby strengthening their organizational set-up as well as improvement of advisory mechanisms and the efficiency of water supply services. |
