Description: |
The Saiga Conservation Alliance (SCA) is a network of researchers and conservationists who for more than fifteen years have collaborated to study and conserve the saiga antelope, a unique nomadic species inhabiting the steppes and semi-deserts of Central Asia. The majority of us belong to the scientific and conservation communities of the saiga's remaining range states of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, the Russian Federation, Mongolia, and the main consumer state China. As such, we are uniquely placed to understand and participate in local culture and institutions and to influence and implement policy.
SCA works to achieve the long-term survival of the saiga antelope through advancing scientific understanding of this migratory mammal's unique ecology, by addressing the economic forces and trans-boundary issues which threaten its survival, by drawing upon the cultural renewal which holds promise for its future, and through educational efforts to engage local communities and other stakeholders in its protection.
SCA's conservationists have three main areas of expertise: 1) scientific monitoring of saiga populations to determine current saiga status and threats (which is frequently undertaken with the participation of ex-saiga hunters and unemployed villagers with appropriate skills), 2) building sustainable relationships with state agencies and local stakeholders, and 3) providing conservation education to local children, and more recently teenagers and adults in remote communities as well as nationally. |
